You’re an artist and a mother. How do you balance time with your beautiful children and your business?

I can’t say the word “balance” is even close to what life is like in our house!  I have two full days a week where I have true childcare and those days are spent making jewelry.  All my correspondence with customers, retail clients and marketing opportunities is done at night after the kids are in bed or while my kids are taking naps during the days. I have learned to say “YES PLEASE!” when family and friends offer to help and my favorite moments of owning this business have been when I find myself in my workshop late at night with a dear friend, drinking tea and packaging jewelry together.  I very very much value the opportunity to spend as much time with my children as I do, and still have this creative outlet as my “job”.  But my husband will be the first one to tell you there’s not balance involved in this equation!
What has been the biggest lesson you have learned as an artist/business owner?
I am coming from a publishing background.  Owning a business, marketing, all that were all totally new to me.  Besides my creative vision, all I brought into the business side of things is knowing what it’s like being a consumer.  And as a consumer, I have very high expectations when it comes to customer service.  Now, as a business owner, I have a zero-tolerance policy for unhappy customers, meaning I will do anything I need to to let them know they are valued and appreciated.  I have had countless customers tell me how pleased they have been with the way I treat them and the personal service, that it’s clear to me that good customer service is what sets one business apart from another.
What is your favorite thing about living in the Green Mountains?
This is a hard question to answer, because I deeply deeply love Vermont. There is something about the community here, the way we care for each other and the land around us that is unlike any other place I have lived.  I spent years in other places after high school, but never found the same sense of community anywhere else.  Plus, you always hear about the winters in Vermont…but the summers here are unreal. :)
