Though winter may be raging outside here in Northeast Ohio, it’s time to start planning your garden if you haven’t already. I know I started getting my seed catalogs this week and we have been having fun milling through them an marking pages.
I think we’ll be building one or two more beds this year and will be raising our existing beds an extra 6 inches. I would LOVE a whole bed for lavender this summer since we have such nice sun, but I need to do some extra reading before I have Jared take the time to build a box for me. Artichokes fascinate me, but I think they may be too advanced for me. Last year we learned a lot about what we needed to plant more of, and what we didn’t use as much of. For instance… LOTS more snow peas this year, we were way overboard on lettuce last year. It was a great season for learning.
Here are some of my favorite seed resources:
Are you trying anything new in your garden this year?
Great Post! Can’t wait for spring!
Neither can we! I can’t wait to see how the compost has ‘cooked’!
I’m increasing my cut flower garden by 50%!!! Lots of dahlias, more zinnias, bells of ireland, and a whole hedge of lavender (which will be established around the vegetable garden). I am super excited. I’m going to try my hand at bok choy and chinese cabbage this spring too. Otherwise, same old, same old. I’m expecting great things from the raspberry patch I planted last year. :)
Wow! I’m hoping the roses, peonies and hydrangea we planted last year start to fill out! And I’m looking forward to tasting some of our perennial produce! And of course it will be nice to see some of the flowers that bloom bi-annually.
Looking forward to watching your garden! I’m so envious of your raspberry patch! I wish we had a nice spot for one.
This is one of the best parts of winter–when the seed catalogues start rolling in. As far as edibles go, I think we’re going to try growing blueberries in containers (everything is in containers these days, haha). I’m looking forward to seeing pictures of your lovely garden this spring!
I just started planning out my garden this past weekend! I have a list of seeds I need to order. Have you ever checked out the Hudson Valley Seed Library? (seedlibrary.org) I like that they’re semi-local for me (I’m in WNY). I’m especially in love with their Art Packs; my SIL got some for Christmas, and I’ve been itching to order some myself. I think they’d be lovely in a frame.
Last year was a year of learning for me, too – I did a post on my blog of which tomato varieties I liked and didn’t like back in October, so I’d remember what to order this time around. Also? Don’t take a week-long vacation during the peak of pea harvest season – I nearly missed them all!
Anyway, I wanted to say hi; I’ve been following you since your days of posting in the wedding communities on LiveJournal, and I adore your style! I’ve since left LJ myself and started blogging independently, I hope you’ll come say hello.
