Lost & Fawned

Monthly Archives: November 2011

I’m working on restocking the shop for the holidays this week and I wanted to kick off the holiday season with a little something special for the readers that make MY everyday a little more sparkly.

Use the coupon code “FIRSTSNOW15″ when you make a purchase at Lost & Fawned this week and enjoy 15% off your total purchase.  Everything comes wrapped ready to gift (for you or someone special).  Cheers to the season of giving!  Have a lovely December.

Thanksgiving weekend was spent with family.   We had a lovely time with our niece, brothers and sisters.  The new sleep cave bedroom turned out perfectly cozy (see better photos here).  Hudson is charming this time of year with lights and caroling in the historic downtown square (a 3 minute walk from our house).  Stay tuned to see the tree skirt I threw together last  week.

I don’t know what got into me, but something possessed me to attempt to update our bedroom the week of Thanksgiving.  The room needed some contrast.  The carpet was light, the walls were light, I selected light bedding and art and nothing was really taking dominance.

You may remember my plans to track down the perfect shade of graphite for the walls.  Well I decided to give Martha another shot and ended up with Seal by Martha Stewart Living for the walls and Sharkey Gray for the ceiling. They are perfect.  It is darker on the walls of course, but it gives that perfect almost gray hue and leans ever so slightly to the warm side (which is great for a bedroom).

With our art from Society 6 and my vegan rack from the New Woodsman it now feels like a more put together space.

Please excuse the photos.  With a dark room you need the perfect light to get a nice photo and this weekend has been pretty dreary.  I haven’t been home at the right time of day to get a great shot.  And I know the bed is unmade.  I snapped these before we dashed off to Thanksgiving dinner.  That lamp will be getting a makeover at some point this winter as well and I’m on the hunt for some lovely throw pillows (or fabric to make some).

We have Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but last year American Express coined a new shopping day to add to the biggest shopping weekend of the year.  That day is Small Business Saturday.  Tomorrow everyone is encouraged to skip big box stores and choose to do some holiday shopping at your local small businesses.  Every purchase directly bolsters the local economy.  So grab the family and slow things down.  Park the car and walk shop to shop on your favorite Main Street.  Find unique, local gifts for your loved ones instead of the usual.

For more information visit the website or the facebook page to spread the word.

Thanks to my amazing readers I have a list of 20 words to inspire the Lost & Fawned Photography Challenge.  It started as a way to hone my own skills, but the list was so good I wanted to share it with others.

I’ll interpret the words however I feel and post them at my leisure.  I already have ideas for some, others I have no idea how I’ll translate yet.  But I’ll figure it out.

I encourage you to take the challenge along with me.  Dust off your camera and be inspired!  Please comment here with a link to your blog (if you don’t have a blog, that’s ok too!) so others can follow your progress.  Feel free to take the checklist above and link back to this post.

Good luck!

With the holidays nearly upon us, it’s time to start thinking about gift giving.  My first gift guide of the season is inspired by the gorgeous mood and palette of this photo.  Navy, slate, silver and chocolate are pretty universally accepted colors for anyone (man, woman, little ones, old, young, teens, etc.).  I included a mix of deals and luxury gifts (and maybe some treats for yourself).

Ever since I saw this post I have been obsessing with the idea of visiting Iceland.  So many diverse landscapes, from glaciers, to waterfalls and black sand beaches to hillsides so green they nearly glow.  For days I have been devouring everything thing I can find on the country.  Maybe we found our honeymoon location.  It sounds so romantic to bundle up and wander the streets of Reykjavik (I love the colorful rooftops), explore Reynisfjara Beach or bathe in the Blue Lagoon.

While all families require different degrees of formality when it comes to Thanksgiving, I always felt like I was expected to look nice, but feel comfortable (after all kicking back on the sofa after eating 3 helpings of mashed potatoes doesn’t feel quite right in a cocktail dress).  Whether you are having dinner at your grandmas or wine and a fried turkey with friends here is my foul-proof thanksgiving uniform.

I started with a basic cute tee I found for $19 from clearance at Threadless and built a warm and cozy outfit (but tidy and clean) with pieces from around the web.

  1. Fitted, dark wash denim always looks nicer than faded and torn.  These are from IOU Project.
  2. A cozy cardigan in a fall-ish hue.  I found this one on clearance at Madewell.
  3. Try something new this year and make some memories with a Diana F+ from Lomography.  Have them developed and bring the prints to Christmas.
  4. Just in case you end up at a no-shoes household, be sure to wear some cute (and clean!) socks like these from Need Supply Co.
  5. If it’s not snowing yet, these heeled ankle boots by Steven are a perfect early holiday gift to yourself.

Stay tuned next week for a dressier (but still comfy) Thanksgiving look.

Wish somewhat granted!  Got a text from my boss before walking out the door to take the day off.  Of course I won’t really be napping all day, but it does give me some time to catch up on emails and get some things in order around the house I neglected this weekend (and make a yummy meal on a Monday!).

To celebrate, here are some things I found lovely, inspiring or just cool over the weekend.

These knitted Eames chairs from Plain Living.  I love that it doesn’t permanently alter the original structure, and the poppy red is wonderful too.

These beautiful fall foliage inspired floral arrangements from Design Sponge.  It’s inspired me to spruce up our dining room table today.  It may be too late for most of these gorgeous colors, but we still have some pretty oranges and browns in our yard.

These original “stormscapes” by Stormscape Studios.  I love buying original art.  And these little paintings capture my favorite type of weather (dark skies make the landscape look so vibrant).

Old fashioned Rag-Rolls tutorial on A Beautiful Mess.  I would love to try this on a weekend.  Maybe my hair would learn to hold a curl.

Last week I blogged a new color play board on Cotton & Brass.  See the full board over here.

I want to learn to quilt.  Someday.  Untill I do, I’ll keep practicing and fantacizing about gorgeous quilts like this one by Brandeye.

Have a wonderful Monday.
