Lost & Fawned

I have to take a moment to brag about our view.  We splurged a little and snagged a room on the 18th floor of the Fallsview Marriott and it didn’t disappoint.  We watched fireworks over the falls last night and had a gorgeous sunset.  Right now the fog is just clearing and the mist over the falls is amazing.

Well we made it!  After dropping off Logan at the doggie hotel we got on the road and got stuck in  traffic for about an hour right outside of town.  Once we got moving it was an easy drive.

Before crossing into Canada, we decided to hit up Old Fort Niagara on the American side.  We’re suckers for historic sites.  It was quiet and uncrowded and we were constantly amazed at how beautifully it was preserved for being nearly 300 years old.  The french castle (above) was breathtaking as we walked through the old Redoubt and got our first glimpse at the inside of the fort.

Hourly musket demonstrations and a mortar demonstration (below) were pretty cool.  We grabbed some ice cream while we walked the fort (and it was actually a pretty good bargain.  The “small” cone was surprisingly gigantic!).  Beautiful panoramic views of the lake were also a highlight.  I would say this is a “must see” if you are planning a trip up here and have any kind of interest in history.

Also, I couldn’t help snagging a photo of this beautiful suspended shelf in on the Redoubts (above, right).  Trying to think of a spot in our own house where we could recreate it.  Maybe the new laundry room when we get around to it.
