We’ve been looking for a new piece of furniture to rehab and this weekend we found it! At an estate sale I spotted this little mod-century foot stool under a pile of things and it was love at first sight. Jared negotiated a fabulous price for it and it ended up in the back of our mini cooper.
It’s the perfect sized project to try some new techniques out. I will be attempting to strip the wood legs and return them to their original glory and I will also be trying piping for the first time. If anyone has any tips on piping please let me know! I know I’ll have to get out the zipper foot for my machine and I’ll be doing a lot of practicing on test fabric.
So any suggestions on a fabric? What would you upholster the top in? Maybe a wool tweed? Or a subtle pattern? I would like something fairly neutral and budget friendly.
This week’s giveaway is a real beauty! Faith from Ordinary Mommy is graciously offering one lucky reader one of her beautiful Little Peacock Feather necklaces! It’s the perfect little accessory for autumn. Faith is such an artist with felt and every one her her pieces are a total treasure. I adore her little blossom bobby pins and this butterfly crown headband is so beautiful.
Faith was kind enough to answer some questions about crafting and her life.
Outside of your beautiful felt pieces, what else do you create?
Right now most of my creative energy goes into designing and creating with felt, but in the past I have stitched up pillows, made simple curtains, and during my younger years I spent a lot of time doing counted cross-stitch (which I miss and hope to do more of!). The handmade item I am most proud of, however, is the quilt that I designed six years ago for our couch. Many hours of machine and hand sewing went into that! I am proud to say that it is holding up very well to all the abuse it takes from my three kids.
What does a typical work day look like for you?
I use the term “work day” loosely! My youngest is just about to turn 1, so most of my day revolves around her schedule. I fit in my sewing and design work during the day whenever I can find time. Some days I sew in the mornings, some days in the afternoon, and some days in the evening. There are days when I become obsessed and manage to find time during all of those periods. Plus, I compulsively check my email and twitter every thirty minutes or so! I’m trying to get that under control because I find it to be very anti-productive.
Your little ones are adorable! Do they ever help you with your pieces?
Thanks! (I’m pretty sure they are the most adorable little people I’ve ever laid eyes on.) They definitely love to touch and look at everything I create! My three-year-old daughter especially, has spent a lot of time sitting on my lap while I sew over the last two years. It can certainly be a bit challenging to stitch while she squirms and adjusts; I am entirely more likely to stick myself, but who can resist a sweet snuggle from a pretty little girl? As my children get older I’m really hoping to get them more involved with my creative process. I would love to teach my girls (and my son too) creative skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.
